The OMITI Halloween Edition: Scary and Satisfying Horror Whodunits
Five Murder Mystery Horror Flicks For Halloween
OMITI will never contain spoilers, so read on and enjoy.
October is the best time to try a new scary movie. Unfortunately, as far as finding watchable horror mystery mashups go, good movies in this microgenre are few and far between. There are also plenty of idiotic horror movie tropes that prevent mystery fans from enjoying horror. As Sydney Prescott says, “There’s always some stupid killer stalking some big-breasted girl who can't act who is always running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door.” But don’t let that stop you from giving horror mystery crossovers a chance.
I’ve combed through three dozen or so contenders for this list and narrowed it down to the most watchable horror mysteries currently streaming. Happy Halloween!

There’s Someone Inside Your House (rated TV-MA, 1 hr., 36 min.) Available on Netflix
This horror whodunit has some of the best representation you’ll ever find in a horror movie. That’s cool, but what about the actual mystery? It’s easy to get pulled in, considering it’s a mashup of a lot of other horror whodunits. Worth watching unless you haven’t seen Scream.

Werewolves Within (rated R, 1 hour, 37 min.) Available on Hulu and Kanopy
A snowstorm hits Beaverfield in the middle of a murder investigation and the townspeople are trapped in a local inn, and suspicions run rampant. Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso, The Afterparty) is hilarious as new ranger Finn and really carries the movie. Be warned: there are plot holes. Is it fun anyway? You might like it for a few chuckles and the mystery.

Happy Death Day, (rated PG13, 1 hr. 36 min.) Available on Prime Video or Apple TV for purchase
This is a great entry in the mystery horror genre. Tree, a college student, is just trying to make it through another birthday when things take an unbelievable turn. Now she’s on the clock to try and find the murderer before they find her.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (rated R, 1 hr. 35 min.) Available on Paramount+ and Kanopy
Pete Davidson and a whole bunch of new faces star in this ensemble locked room horror mystery movie. The gang, trapped in a mansion during a storm, tries to solve a murder before they get picked off one by one. This movie is only watchable if the crowds at Coachella aren’t annoying to you, know what I’m saying?

Scream (1996, rated R, 1 hr., 51 min.) Available on Max
You don’t get much better than the most highly regarded horror whodunit there is, Scream. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson jolted the horror genre back to life with sarcastic wit, playful edits, tongue-in-cheek dialogue, and horror Easter eggs galore. You could have a Scream marathon of all six flicks and try to guess who the killers are all night long, but as a group of teenagers in our house can attest, the only one worth watching is the original.
