A warm welcome to all of my new subscribers, and an especially big thank you to my regular readers. I appreciate your time and ongoing support of Only Murders In The Inbox!
I’m Reda Rountree, a wife, mother, television producer and writer. I live in Los Angeles, California with my family and kitties, and usually split my time between both coasts because of our family roots in The South. We love to travel and stay in touch with our extended family, friends from college (and kindergarten!) and musicians and bands we’ve known forever.
I’m also really into music which is why there’s always a song accompanying every OMITI newsletter. My husband and I met because of our love for music, so I’m also his sidekick music publicist when I’m not writing. Before I got sick — more on that later — we were the kind of family that saw live music together regularly because that’s the only thing I love as much as I love mysteries!
What do I love in the mystery genre? When it comes to crime fiction, my taste in writers really varies. After graduating from Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew in elementary school, I fell in love with Agatha Christie, Mickey Spillane and Rex Stout. I’ve gone through mainstream favorites like James Patterson and Janet Evanovich but I also hold an appreciation for more obscure mystery writers and Edgar Award winners. I’m especially fond of Louise Penny. Endeavour and Shetland are two of my favorite murder mystery shows, but you can guess from the title of this newsletter which current television series I love most of all. There are many talented television writers I like, a few being Madeleine George, David Kane and Charlie Peppers; when it comes to television EPs, I hold Chris Carter, John Hoffman and Steven Moffat in the highest regard.
The reason I created Only Murders In The Inbox is because I’ve been waylaid from my career — and life in general — by Long Covid and this newsletter is my way of coping. To learn more about Long Covid, read my article in Los Angeles Magazine and listen to my interview on AirTalk with Larry Mantle for NPR and most recently, my interview on NPR’s All Things Considered. There are millions of people all over the world who have Long Covid and the majority don’t even realize it. Please share this article and interview with anyone you know who might be struggling after contracting COVID-19.
Enough about that. Long Covid is an important part of my personal story but not my main focus in my writing, because at some point, I need to take a step back. So what’s this newsletter about? OMITI is where I delve into crime fiction in entertainment. You can start here for a detailed explanation of why I created OMITI and the type of mysteries I cover.
I can now proudly say that this mystery newsletter is currently read in twenty-three countries and over half of the United States!

Song of the Day: “Nancy Drew” by Tuscadero
Former Nancy Drew addict here, and then a smattering of mysteries, many read recently while writing my novel Welcome to Murder Week. Who knew that AA Milne wrote mysteries? I love the new mysteries by Anthony Horowitz, have been obsessed with Rebecca since I was 14, and include in my love of mysteries many classics that aren't classified as mysteries but contain lots of secrets (think Jane Eyre). Also recently discovered Elly Griffiths -- I loved her Post Script Murders. Happy to have found this substack and wish I'd found it about a year ago!
The Being Jane Austen, Maisie Dobbs, and on TV the BBC Poirot mysteries have been great fun for me. I’ve saved the recent Moonflower Murders but not watched it yet. My husband and I are also enjoying Mallorca Files on Prime. It is lovely to make your acquaintance via SmallStacks.
