Welcome to the latest edition of Only Murders In The Inbox! If you’re a regular reader, thanks for returning; if you’re only just now joining us, we’re happy to have you! Every week, OMITI covers murder mysteries in literature and entertainment. We delve into the ways the Mystery genre is significant in pop culture. You’ll also find curated suggestions and lists here so if you’re looking for a particular kind of read, I’ve got you! If you’re new to Only Murders, here are some popular editions you might wanna check out:

Today is special because, exactly one year ago today, I decided to create this newsletter. Last year, I developed debilitating Long Covid. My very first edition was essentially a letter to my friends and extended family explaining why I was suddenly MIA and what had happened to me.
On this anniversary, I’ve decided I need to talk about my illness and what I’m still going through. I’m working on a book about my Long Covid experience and will be publishing it chapter by chapter in a separate newsletter called It’s All In My Head. If you’re interested in learning more, you can subscribe to that newsletter using this link:
Only Murders In The Inbox has been, and always will be, separate from that story, because my love for the Mystery genre and my work on my debut whodunit novel has been the distraction I needed, and still need, to get me through this chapter of my life. I love connecting with other readers and viewers who love mysteries, meeting other writers, and discovering new books, movies and television series. I’ve reconnected with good friends — and made some new ones — all because of this newsletter. It really has been a blessing, and I’m so glad I created it and that you’re here reading it right now. Your attention and time is the best gift any writer could ask for, and I appreciate you much more than I can express!
Please share my story by forwarding this newsletter edition and the link to It’s All In My Head to someone you know who might need to read it. However, Only Murders In The Inbox is exactly what it says it is — a newsletter only about murder mysteries. I’m not automatically sending out It’s All In My Head to my murder mystery subscribers. If you decide you’d like to read it, you can subscribe by clicking the link above. No pressure!
The Escape Game in Century City, Los Angeles, California, September 2024; really happy to not be in a wheelchair for this photo!
No clues revealed below in case you decide to go! This OMITB experience is wheelchair accessible and lasts an hour.
For mystery fans — and especially for those of us who love Only Murders In The Building, September is an exciting month. We’ve got brand new episodes for the next several weeks. The trio is making the rounds for press and publicity for the new season, so they’re everywhere! Selena Gomez, being the fabulous woman she is, has partnered with Google to promote mental health awareness through advocacy in L.A. Unified public schools, including at our own. And, happily, the brand new OMITB-themed escape room just opened here in Los Angeles — for a limited time!
I’m super lucky because my best friend Leyla and her awesome kids (who are my kids’ best friends, how great is that?) love mysteries as much as I do, so the six of us spent Saturday afternoon in Century City at The Escape Game on opening weekend. Hulu has partnered with the popular escape room chain for a limited-time immersive experience themed around the hit television series. The premise is centered around the hunt for a missing film reel from the movie featured in Season Four. Players search through the intricate movie set, uncover hidden clues, and solve puzzles to locate the missing film reel.
There were six of us, and we were paired with two other players for a total of eight sleuths. We were lead into a room designed to be the set of the OMITB movie based on the podcast. Talk about heaven! For hardcore fans of the TV show, there are dozens of Easter eggs, and they’re not all clues! If you’ve never seen the mystery series and aren’t a fan but want to tag along with friends who are, this also works equally well.
The escape room sequence isn’t just an hour in one room filled with clues — as you solve puzzles and proceed to the next series of steps, you unlock other rooms, all within a thoughtful set design. The puzzles were clever, and if you have a wordsmith, math whiz and observant team players in your group, it’s going to be especially fun! Tickets for this experience are thirty-nine bucks and, in my opinion, worth it. The only thing that could’ve made this better is a surprise appearance by the trio themselves. Plan on being there for at least an hour and a half. Parking is free for the first hour and available in the Westfield Century City parking garage. Have a great time!

Song of the Day: “Angel In Flip Flops” by Steve Martin
I'm really scared to go in Escape Rooms, but I would do this one. Sounds awesome! Congrats on the 1 year anniversary on Substack, Reda!!
Congratulations, Reda🎉 One year is a great accomplishment❣️ That sleuthing session sounds like a lot of fun. Nothing remotely like it where I live. Enjoy! And good luck with “It’s All in My Head”. I’m sure it will be informative and useful for many, many people. 🤞🏽
