The Top 30 TV Murder Mysteries For July & August
Summertime is the perfect opportunity to try a new mystery series! As far as the next two months go, there are some choice options over the next few weeks, and some much-anticipated shows on the horizon! This summer, if you’re looking for quality over quantity when it comes to crime dramas and whodunits, this is the time to ditch Prime Video (and the disappointing Ballard and Countdown) and subscribe or renew your PBS Passport so you won’t miss Patience or the Maigret reboot, which looks promising! See the trailer below. Also on PBS right now: Broadchurch, Miss Scarlet, Endeavour, Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders, The Marlow Murder Club and more!
Truthfully, there are plenty of new shows I won’t recommend (Death Valley, Good Ship Murder, I could go on and on) but I prefer to curate rather than criticize, so let’s focus on the best television in the Mystery genre that’s currently streaming. I’ve personally vetted every show on this list. Here is OMITI’s compilation of the Top 30 mystery series currently streaming for July and August on all major platforms. Let me know in the comments if I missed one of your faves!
*This list has been updated from the May & June Top 30 edition of Only Murders In The Inbox. For even more show recommendations, see previous Top 30 editions.

30. I, Jack Wright - Britbox
(One Season, 6 episodes total, 43 minutes each) A rich business mogul dies under peculiar circumstances, leaving his family to wonder about his state of mind before he passed away. However, nothing could prepare them for the bombshell news at the will reading, which stirs the pot, ignites sibling infighting, and exposes dirty secrets. If you’re a fan of Bloodline, Succession, or The Perfect Couple, there’s a good chance you’ll like this, too.

29. Scott & Bailey - Britbox
(Five Seasons, 33 episodes total, 45 minutes each) Detectives Janet Scott & Rachel Bailey are with Manchester Police's Major Incident Team. For five seasons, the duo solves cases while juggling complicated personal lives. Scott (Lesley Sharp) is a mom dealing with a marriage that’s falling apart; Bailey (Suranne Jones) is a passionate wild card who often clashes with her bosses because of her unconventional tactics when it comes to catching killers. This is a consistently solid show and features a great supporting cast, too. Fans of Cagney & Lacey will love this series.

28. Ludwig - Britbox
(One Season, 6 episodes total, 58 minutes each) This Britbox show has been the best surprise of the 2024-25 television season! Reclusive John “Ludwig” Taylor looks for answers to the mysterious disappearance of his twin brother James by adopting his identity as the lead investigator for Cambridge's major crimes squad. Fortunately, John’s real-life career as a crossword puzzle designer and his out-of-the-box thinking comes in handy when he assumes his brother’s role. Brilliant but socially awkward and unassuming, his character possesses plenty of parallels to DS Dodds, one half of the duo McDonald and Dodds, one of Britbox’s most popular recent series.

27. School Spirits - Paramount+
(Two seasons, 50 minute long episodes, 16 episodes total) One of the smartest moves Paramount made in its early days of securing originals for its streaming platform was green lighting School Spirits. The young adult series gave Paramount a boost outside of its action movie film franchises and Star Trek catalogue for that much-coveted 18-24 demographic; Netflix later picked it up, widening its audience so that the show has a wider reach than ever. In this whodunit, Maddie is a teenager who’s trying to solve her own murder. She’s stuck at her high school with every teen who’s ever died at Split River High, which turns out to be quite a few! If you liked Christopher Pike mystery novels growing up, you will love this. Check out more teen mysteries in this earlier edition of OMITI below.

26. True Detective and True Detective: Night Country - HBO and Max
(Four seasons, 31 hour long episodes total) The first season of True Detective is considered by many in the industry to be the exemplar of a mystery series in television, primarily for its dialogue, pacing, and character development. If you haven’t seen it yet and like your mysteries unsettling and Southern, disturbing and immersive, it’s time to check it out. However, it’s the fourth installment in the True Detective series that had everyone talking in 2024. This show is much more than water cooler conversation; expect a gritty, gut-wrenching crime drama with nail-biting moments. You’ll see why this is one of HBO’s most popular television shows. The review for True Detective: Night Country is one of the most-read editions of Only Murders In The Inbox, ever. You can read it here.
