Great news! There’s so much to choose from in television in 2026, I could have easily made this Only Murders In The Inbox edition a Top 50 list! Many previously mentioned series from our last Top 30 I still highly recommend but I assume you’ve seen — Endeavour, Bloodline and The Unforgotten, for example — and also a few that I’ve cut because there are now better choices streaming. I’ll always recommend Monk, Psych and Poker Face if you need some laughs with your murder mysteries, but I have some new ones on this latest list I know you’ll love!
Rarely will I mention shows I dislike, mainly because I consider myself a curator and not a critic. I’d much rather save space for a mystery I think you’ll love rather than one I’d want to pan. This time around though, guys, I have to mention His & Hers, and not just because I know you’d mention it if I didn’t. The Netflix adaptation of Alice Feeney’s bestselling novel doesn’t do the book justice. I had to leave it off the list. Skip, skip, skip. Seriously.
I can’t say to skip one show without telling you to watch another. I’m excited to announce Bookish is finally here in the States and is now available on PBS! We’ve been waiting for this series since last summer. This clever original is written by and starring Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Good Omens, Moonflower Murders). I’ve watched the entire series, six episodes total. This is award-winning television. Edgars, Emmys, BAFTAs — Gatiss has got this in the bag. If I had to guess, the pilot is a clear winner for Outstanding Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie. If you enjoy Sherlock, The Third Man, Anthony Horowitz, historical fiction, Miss Scarlet, Good Omens and classic whodunits, you will love this show. If you have PBS Passport — which I highly recommend if you haven’t subscribed yet — you can watch the entire series now. Check out the trailer below. Let me know what you think!

For newcomers to Only Murders In The Inbox, a few notes about this bimonthly list: I always personally vet every television series on every Top 30 list I publish. If it’s here, I’ve seen it. Also know I’ll always give you a heads up if anything is excessively violent or has a TV-MA listing; I also recommend Does The Dog Die? for trigger warnings in both television and film. Our family uses that website quite a bit!

30. Bad Sisters - Apple TV
(Two seasons, 55 minutes each, 18 episodes total, Rated TV-MA, SA situations) John Paul just won’t die. Five sisters are pushed to the brink in this black comedy about a family desperate to stay together while they’re slowly falling apart. Four of the five sisters are united in their hatred of their fifth sister’s husband, John Paul, a truly despicable man who has a list a mile long of enemies who’d love to take him out. But who succeeded?

29. Foyle’s War - Acorn TV
(8 seasons, 90 minutes episodes, 28 episodes total) This award-winning WWII detective series from mystery writer Anthony Horowitz is smartly written and perfect for history buffs who love crime fiction. Stories are meaningful and compelling; DCS Christopher Foyle is a detective beyond reproach, similar to DI Jimmy Perez of Shetland. Viewers who appreciate history as much as they do engaging murder mysteries will love Foyle’s War.

28. Task - HBO Max
(One season, hour-long episodes, 7 episodes total, Rated TV-MA) This crime drama is the long-awaited return to form by Brad Ingelsby, the creator and writer of the critically-acclaimed show Mare of Easttown. It stars Mark Ruffalo with a talented ensemble: Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Raúl Castillo, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, and Martha Plimpton. Outside Philly, an FBI agent struggling with personal loss is assigned to head a task force to stop a string of violent robberies that lead to the murder of two people. It’s an intense, violent nail-biter that’ll probably earn several Emmy nods.

27. Ludwig - Britbox
(Two Seasons, 58 minutes each, 12 episodes total) This Britbox show was the best surprise of the 2024-25 television season! Reclusive John “Ludwig” Taylor looks for answers to the mysterious disappearance of his twin brother James by adopting his identity as the lead investigator for Cambridge’s major crimes squad. Fortunately, John’s real-life career as a crossword puzzle designer and his out-of-the-box thinking comes in handy when he assumes his brother’s role. Brilliant but socially awkward and unassuming, his character possesses plenty of parallels to DS Dodds, one half of the duo McDonald and Dodds, one of Britbox’s most popular recent series. Season Two is around the corner!

26. Presumed Innocent - Apple TV
(Limited Series, 50 minutes each, 8 episodes total) The latest murder mystery series from legendary show creator David E. Kelley stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich who is accused of murdering his colleague. During the investigation, additional evidence comes to light, and soon everyone is a suspect even though Sabich is the one on the chopping block.
