Also, just a reminder: I’ll never reveal the killer or crucial plot points in any review or curated mystery list in this newsletter. As a reader and viewer who loves crime fiction or, I get it, and I promise not to ruin it for you. As we all know, figuring it out for yourself is the best part! So just know when you’re reading, I’ll never give too much away and, in some instances, will be purposefully vague so as not to spoil anything super twisty; hopefully my descriptions will be thorough enough for you to know if it’s a book, film or series you’d enjoy.

A big reason I created this newsletter is because I had a hard time finding exactly what I wanted to watch and read. I wanted a source examining current murder mysteries, containing summaries without spoilers, and offering collections of themed whodunits and crime thrillers if I was in the mood for a certain type of setting or story. While I’ll readily give you my opinion on a show, film or book, I don’t consider myself an entertainment critic, but rather a curator of mysteries, a fan and lover of the genre that is excited about new releases and enjoys revisiting the classics. The history of Mystery is important, too, so I’ll try to always connect back to earlier works so you can see how other mysteries have influenced what we read today. With that in mind, here are the best selections October. I’ve included trailers in case you’re curious. Sometimes it’s better to go in blind to a story; not everyone wants too many clues in a three minute trailer or television supertease. Skip over watching those if you’d rather have less of an idea of what they’re about, knowing that when you read the descriptions, I’ll never give too much away that would spoil the story for you. After you watch a show on this list, let me know what you think!

The Marlow Murder Club

First up is The Marlow Murder Club, a brand new mystery series based on the Robert Thoroughgood novel, a 2023 Edgar Award nominee. Thoroughgood is best known in television as the creator of the hit mystery franchise Death In Paradise, which has now spawned two spinoffs, Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise. In the quaint town of Marlow, a retired archaeologist, Judith Potts, believes that a brutal murder has occurred; when the police refuse to listen her, she decides to investigate with her two new, unlikely friends.

For viewers who enjoy: Richard Osman’s novels, Murder, She Wrote and Only Murders In The Building

The Marlow Murder Club premieres on PBS Masterpiece on Sunday, October 27th, 2024 at 9/8c. The series will also be available to stream on the PBS App and UKTV Play internationally.
