I loved this feature on brilliant Black detectives in crime fiction! Your exploration of characters like Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins and Detective Danner was fantastic. Highlighting Rudolph Fisher's pioneering role in the genre added depth to the piece. You can see the quality of this piece. Brilliant.

Brilliant!

"In honor of Rudolph Fisher and his work, I’ve compiled a list of significant black detectives in literature, film and entertainment. This is by no means a comprehensive list, just a few favorites, and although I know there are numerous detectives I could feature, I lean more toward American ones in lit, film and television in this list because that’s what I love. Let’s start with my favorite."

You know, in the movie ‘The Bone Collector’ the Lincoln Rhyme character is played by Denzel Washington. Not sure if the character was supposed to be black, but that is the only reason why I started reading the ‘Lincoln Rhyme Series’ by Jeffery Deaver.

That’s an excellent point, now I’m going to research and find out, because I also don’t know!

Wonderful Reda! As a mystery writer myself, I adore your deep dive into the genre and this entry is no exception. Thank you for highlighting and sharing. I am super excited for Cross to arrive on Prime (I am a huge Alex Cross fan) and wasn't Luther gritty and wonderful indeed? Much food for thought here and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, thank you!

Amazing. My baby boy name is Ezekiel ❤️ This is so invigorating and I’d love to write this list. My niece loves mysteries and I’ve been looking for Black mystery books, but movies are awesome too. This could be something that I incorporate in my homeschool English, as movie critiques. I’m definitely going to watch these movies. Thank you 🙏🏾

Good read! May I also suggest Shades of Black: Crime and Mystery Stories by African-American Authors

Shades Of Black: Crime and Mystery Stories by African-American Authors https://a.co/d/bdUs8cA

A nice selection of Black sleuths across the decades, written by Chester Himes, Eleanor Bland, Valerie Wilson Wesley, et al.

I would also suggest the Tamara Hayle mysteries by Valerie Wilson Wesley; Blanche mysteries by Eleanor Bland; and Mali Anderson mysteries by Grace Edwards. They are all (probably) out of print but you can find them used; I suggest Thriftbooks.
